old things i wrote about these issues
here are some links to things i wrote at other times about class/wealth redistribution/greed and responses people wrote back. its interesting to read them now, for me, because its been so long.
my 1998 essay about going to grad school and classing up with a response by ananya mukherjea: http://makezine.org/greed.html
maybe also from 98 or 99, about why we should give cash to poor people, from when i was just learning the concept of harm reduction (cute!), http://makezine.org/foodonly.html
the essay i wrote in maybe 2001 about why i wasn't into cell phones (which generated more hate mail than anything else i've ever written, mostly from activists calling me a hypocrite)
http://makezine.org/celly.html
from 2003 maybe, letters between me and my sister and my friend pascal about poverty and white trash fetishization. some of this was published in michelle tea's anthology "without a net."

sorry i don't know how to make real links in live journal.

nice thing with LJ is that if you put in the full URL, like you did with your post, it will set that up as a link

I'm just sayin....
The thing that struck me most when I read your post from Make about cell phones is that you could make the same arguments several decades ago about land lines (Safety in your car versus safety in your home, needing for people to be able to talk to you without even coming to your house to see you, Mr oh-so-important! I remember from Dostoevsky he described the way you contacted someone was to go to their house, the landlady would let you in, and you'd sit in their room till they came home.)

From a purely utilitarian perspective though, ultimately cell service will be significantly less expensive than land line service. It is already the case that cell phone service (if you go with a more inexpensive plan and use it as a cell rather than an ipod) is comparable with land line service. Those in a less economically advantaged position are now choosing to forgo a land line and simply choose a cell as their primary phone. If a cell and land line would cost you roughly the same, why not go for the phone that is usable everywhere?

In addition pre-paid cell phone service costs are falling and are becoming comparable to traditional cell costs. So while you have to have some economic investment and history to get a land line, you can walk into any store and buy a pre-paid phone and start talking moments later. No credit check. No history. No need for a house or apartment in which to place your phone. If you are living in an SRO or maybe even couch surfing, you can have a phone number to put down on a job application.

Of course pre-paid plans used to be financially comparable to Rent-to-own places (charging more to the poor because they were the only game in town.) However competition and greater usage by more middle class users has brought the price down. Once VoIP (calling over the internet) hits the cell phone market, I suspect this will fall more precipitously.

So within a few years cell phone service with comparable services to your land line will be available to you for a lower cost. This kind of service will also be more accessible to people who are less enfranchised and who may not have the requisites to land line phone ownership (a place to live, at least a modicum of a credit history to avoid a security deposit, etc.) At that point, if your justifications for declining a cell phone are not social, then choosing to have a land line may be more expensive and a marker of a higher social class. D'oh! :p
